Founded in 1966 in Oakland, California, the Black Panther Party grew quickly into a national organization of five thousand members who ran forty-nine chapters and branches across the US. This is the history of the Seattle Chapter of the Black Panther Party, first chapter set up outside of California:

On April 12, 1968, while at the West Coast Black Student Union conference in San Francisco, Aaron and Elmer Dixon decided to cross the Bay Bridge to attend the funeral of Lil’ Bobby Hutton, the first member of the Black Panther Party, who had been gunned down while in the custody of the Oakland police. Aaron Dixon reflecting on looking into the casket of Lil” Bobby Hutton and hearing the overwhelming weeping of his mother, said it “was almost like looking into a vision of the movement, and it was not what we had expected. It was not the glory and the victory we had romanticized about.”...
